Another Long Break in Transmission....

Back again after another long break from posting. April just sucked, I mean really bad, and I think not posting was a good thing for fear of this becoming one constant whine :) Nik Santi on PlusOne just got to talking about blogging and I thought it was time to return.

Since then however things are looking better. I think in April too there was a hell of a lot going on, with work being heavy, the house extension ongoing, and then coming home to play some cards I think I just wasnt switched on. A bit more focused now, the house is nearing completion (2-3 weeks remaining) so I've felt a bit more relaxed.

There's been some great conversations on PlusOne too that have helped - some interesting links to software and graphing tools led to a brief discussion about expectations - what sort of win rate is realisitic. I'd been break even over my last 15k hands but still overall 2ptbb/100 positive - that had been kinda bumming me as I had thought 5ptbb/100 was realistic. Then Chipp posted some population stats which made me check my own database - with over 1,000,000 hands datamined in there the average return is -6.09ptbb/100 ... which really gave me a much more positive spin on my current record.

Anyway so overall I'm feeling better about my game and 've actually (following some discussions with Hellory - thanks for the advice!) been playing more and more at 50nl. At first this seemed kind of counter intuitive since I'd been spinning wheels at 25nl ... but its been a refreshing change and I think it has also helped me focus. My BR is marginal for 50nl but not dangerously thin, so I think I will stick with it, and if I drop below 15 buyins I'll move back down. For now though, I'm enjoying it and hopefully playing a bit better too.

I think that it's really important to not get too hung up on win rates even with a fairly large sample size. I've had streaks of 5k hands where it would apear I was the best NL cash player on the internet. Only to be followed by a string of 5k hands that makes me wonder if I know anything at all about poker.

If you are constantly working on and hopefully improving your game, what does it matter if you only post +2ptbb/100 profit over any given sample size? You can still say what the OVERWHELING majority of poker players can't: You won money.

Nice to see you posting some profits, dude. Keep up the good work. And for christ's sake, can you update this blog more often!
